How to Read a Pre-Purchase or Multi-Point Inspection Report Critically

Inspection reports — whether pre-purchase, multi-point with an oil change, or a state-required check — should tell you what condition your vehicle (or a vehicle you’re considering buying) is actually in. In practice, most don’t. Some shops produce a five-page report that flags every wear item as a future expense to generate estimates. Others produce a one-line "all systems good" with no measurements. Both kinds of report are useless for decision-making. A real inspection report tells you what was measured, what the actual readings were, what the manufacturer specs are, and what action is recommended — with enough specificity that you can take the report to another shop for verification if you want.

The most expensive scenarios we see are pre-purchase inspections done quickly. A buyer asks a quick-lube to "check it out before I buy it," the shop spends 15 minutes on the lift, says "looks good," and the buyer signs the contract. Three months later the buyer discovers the timing chain rattle that was audible on a cold start, the head gasket that was already weeping, or the transmission that shifts harshly under load — none of which appear in a 15-minute walk-around but all of which a real 90-minute inspection would have caught. The cost of a thorough pre-purchase inspection is a fraction of the cost of buying a vehicle with known problems.

At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, our pre-purchase and multi-point inspections include actual measurements: tread depth on all four tires, brake pad thickness against manufacturer spec, fluid condition tests (color, contamination, smell on transmission fluid, moisture content on brake fluid), battery and charging system load tests, cold-start and warm-running performance assessment, suspension play check on a lift, and a road test under varied conditions. We document everything we find with photos, explain what’s significant, and tell you honestly whether the vehicle is a good buy, a marginal one, or one we’d walk away from. The report is yours; you can show it to anyone — the seller, your spouse, another shop for a second opinion.

What to Look for in an Inspection Report

  • Actual measurements, not estimates. Tread depth in 32nds, brake pad thickness in millimeters, fluid condition described specifically. "Brakes look good" is not an inspection finding; "front pads at 6mm, rear at 5mm, manufacturer minimum 3mm" is.
  • A road test that varies conditions. Highway speeds, low-speed maneuvering, hard braking, full-lock turns, and at least 15 minutes of warm-up. A road test that consists of a parking-lot loop is not really a road test.
  • Photos of anything significant. A shop that documents findings with photos is taking the inspection seriously and giving you something you can verify. A report without photos is asking you to trust the writeup.
  • A specific verdict, not vague language. "Recommend front pads within 6 months" or "vehicle in good condition for the mileage" rather than "may need attention" or "wear noted." Specific verdicts are actionable; vague language usually means the shop didn’t actually decide.

If you’re considering buying a used vehicle and want a thorough pre-purchase inspection, or if you’d like a real multi-point inspection performed on a vehicle you already own, drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta. We’ll do the actual examination, document what we find with photos, and tell you what action is warranted and what isn’t. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.
