Battery Testing & Replacement
A weak battery can seem like it's working well, right up to the moment it leaves you stranded in your driveway! At Advantage Auto we diagnose the issue and find the best solution for you. Don't let a dead battery stall your day.
Why Battery "Replacement" Is More Than Swapping the Old One Out
A car battery is one of the few automotive components that looks like a simple swap — disconnect old, connect new, done — but actually has more under the surface than most drivers realize. The wrong battery in the right vehicle produces intermittent electrical faults; the right battery without proper registration on a modern vehicle triggers the battery management system to misinterpret state-of-charge readings; and a battery installed without verifying the underlying charging system is healthy will fail again in months because the alternator that killed the first one is still killing the second one. "Free battery installation" from a parts store solves at most one of those three problems.
A complete battery replacement starts with a charging-system inspection — testing alternator output under load, verifying parasitic draw with the engine off, and confirming the battery isn’t being killed by a problem somewhere else in the vehicle. It includes selecting the correct battery for the application: not just the right Group Size, but the right Cold Cranking Amps, Reserve Capacity, and chemistry (flooded lead-acid vs. AGM vs. EFB) for what the manufacturer actually specifies. On most 2014+ vehicles, the installation also requires battery registration through the OBD-II port so the BMS knows it is dealing with a new battery — without that step, the BMS continues treating the new battery as if it were the old one and undercharges it for months.
At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, battery service starts with a real charging-system test, not just a battery test. We measure alternator output at idle and at speed, check for excessive parasitic draw with the engine off, and verify the underlying electrical system before recommending a new battery. When the battery genuinely is the problem, we install the correct application-specific replacement — AGM where AGM is required, not a flooded substitute — and we register it on vehicles that need registration. The work takes longer than a quick-lube replacement, which is part of why ours hold up better.
What Most Battery Replacement Shops Skip
- Charging system test — the alternator is the most common reason a new battery fails within a year. A shop that won’t test the charging system before selling you a battery is, intentionally or not, selling you one that may die early.
- Battery registration on modern vehicles — 2014+ BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and many other makes need the new battery’s specifications registered to the vehicle’s BMS. Without registration, the new battery undercharges for months and dies prematurely.
- Correct application — AGM, EFB, and flooded batteries are not interchangeable. A vehicle that came with AGM (most start-stop equipped vehicles, many luxury and modern compact makes) cannot run a flooded substitute; it’ll work for a few months and then fail. A shop that doesn’t ask what your owner’s manual actually specifies is guessing.
If your battery is showing signs of weakness — slow crank on cold mornings, dashboard flickers under heavy electrical load, or a battery light that comes and goes — drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta. We’ll test the battery AND the charging system, identify what is actually failing, and install the correct replacement with proper registration if a replacement is what you need. Most battery jobs are completed same-day. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.
