Most check engine light services advertised as "free" are exactly that — free, and worth what you paid. The shop or parts store plugs a scanner into your OBD-II port, reads the code, and tells you the most-common cause associated with that code. That’s not diagnosis. That’s code translation. And while it’s better than nothing, it’s the starting point of an investigation, not the conclusion. The trouble code tells the technician what system complained. It does not tell them why — and that distinction is the entire reason shops with real diagnostic tools charge for the diagnosis.

Modern engine diagnostics requires equipment that quick-service shops typically don’t carry: bidirectional scan tools that can activate individual injectors, ignition coils, and solenoids on command; oscilloscopes that capture the actual electrical waveforms of sensors under load; fuel-pressure gauges and compression testers; smoke machines for detecting vacuum and EVAP leaks; and access to OEM-level service information and technical service bulletins for the specific make and model. None of this is exotic. It is just expensive enough that low-margin shops don’t invest in it — and a $99 code-reading "service" won’t pay for the equipment a real diagnostic requires.

Sometimes that diagnostic takes 30 minutes. Sometimes it takes 2–3 hours on complex intermittent issues. The diagnostic fee is fair — and it’s applied toward the repair cost if you authorize the work. The goal is a confirmed repair strategy, not a parts list.
