Why Most "Tune-Up" Services Don’t Fix What You Came In For

The "tune-up" is one of the most-requested services in auto repair, and one of the most consistently mis-delivered. The classic tune-up — adjusting ignition timing, replacing distributor points, dialing in carburetor jets — disappeared from production vehicles 30 years ago. What survives in the modern era is essentially one item: spark plug replacement, plus the filters and fluids due at the same milestone. When a customer comes in asking for a "tune-up" because the engine is running rough, what they actually need is diagnostic testing — not the spark plug service the term technically describes.

A shop that responds to a "tune-up" request with "we can do that, $300, ready by 4" without asking what the vehicle is doing has skipped the most important step: figuring out whether the customer actually needs spark plugs (maintenance) or whether they need diagnostics (the engine is running rough). Those are completely different jobs. Spark plug replacement on a vehicle that isn’t due for it won’t fix a misfire. Worse, replacing spark plugs based on the assumption they’re the cause of running-rough symptoms can mask the real problem long enough that the underlying failure (injector, coil, vacuum leak, compression) compounds into a more expensive repair.

At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, when someone asks for a tune-up we start with two questions: what is the vehicle currently doing, and how many miles are on the current spark plugs. If the vehicle is running fine and the plugs are at interval, that’s straightforward maintenance and we’ll handle it along with any filters or fluids that share the schedule. If the vehicle is running rough, we’ll explain that the right service is a diagnostic, not a tune-up — and the diagnostic fee is applied toward whatever repair the diagnosis identifies. We don’t sell tune-ups to vehicles that don’t need them, and we don’t do tune-ups when what the vehicle actually needs is a real diagnosis.

Before Authorizing a Tune-Up, Ask

  • What does the shop think the tune-up will accomplish? If the answer is "your engine will run better," ask why they think it’ll run better. If they can’t name the specific failure mode being addressed, they’re guessing.
  • How many miles are on the current spark plugs? Most modern plugs are rated 80,000–100,000 miles. If you’re at 50,000, replacing the plugs probably isn’t fixing anything — they aren’t worn yet.
  • Is there a check engine light? If so, the diagnostic codes are the right starting point for whatever’s wrong, not a generic tune-up. A shop that quotes a tune-up without scanning for codes is skipping the diagnostic step entirely.
  • What’s included? A real "tune-up" today is spark plug replacement plus inspection of related ignition components and any maintenance due at the same milestone (cabin air filter, engine air filter, sometimes throttle body cleaning). If the quote is generic, ask for the line items before authorizing.

If your vehicle is running fine and just approaching its spark plug interval, drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta — we’ll handle the scheduled maintenance along with anything else due at the same milestone. If your vehicle is running rough, what you need is a diagnostic, and we’ll tell you that honestly. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.
