Battery Inspection & Load Testing
A battery can test fine on a basic meter but still fail under load. Our professional battery load testing gives you a true picture of your battery's health before it leaves you stranded. We offer free battery inspections with every service visit.
How to Tell If a Battery Inspection Is Actually an Inspection
The "free battery test" at any parts store or quick-lube takes about two minutes and measures one thing: voltage and approximate cranking capacity at the moment you arrive β usually with the battery already charged from your drive in. That test will tell you whether the battery is dead. It will not reliably tell you whether the battery is dying, whether the alternator is the actual problem, or whether something else in the vehicle is killing the battery. About half the batteries replaced after a free-test verdict either fail again within months (because the underlying problem was never identified) or didn't need replacement in the first place.
A real battery inspection covers the whole electrical system. It includes a load test on the battery itself (pulling actual cranking-current load while monitoring voltage drop, which reveals weak cells that voltage-only tests miss). It includes alternator output testing at idle and under load (a marginal alternator can pass a parts-store battery test by keeping the battery charged but fail to keep up with daily driving demand). It includes a parasitic draw test (with the vehicle fully asleep, identifying aftermarket installations or failed modules pulling current overnight). And on 2014+ vehicles, it includes checking the battery management system status.
At Advantage Auto Service, battery inspection means all of those tests, not just the first one. We tell you whether the battery itself is failing, whether the charging system is healthy, and whether anything else in the vehicle is contributing to early battery wear. If the answer is "your battery is fine but you have a parasitic draw from an aftermarket dash cam," we say that β we don't sell you a battery you don't need.
Three Tests Every Battery Inspection Should Include
- Load test (not just voltage). A battery can pass a voltage test at full charge and fail to start the car on a cold morning. Load tests reveal weak cells.
- Alternator output under load with electrical accessories on. A marginal alternator charges enough to pass a quick check but not enough to keep up with daily demand.
- Parasitic draw test with the vehicle fully asleep. Should be under 50mA; aftermarket installs and failing modules can push it much higher and drain a healthy battery overnight.
If you've had a battery test from another shop and want a second opinion before authorizing a replacement, or if your vehicle has had unexplained battery issues despite a recent new battery, drop by Advantage Auto Service. We'll do the complete test and tell you honestly what is actually failing. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.

How To Jumpstart Your Vehicle

How Car Batteries Work
A car battery is one of the most important parts of a car. It helps start the engine and powers all of the electrical components in the car. Most car batteries are lead-acid batteries. They have six cells that produce 2 volts each for a total of 12 volts.
