Battery Inspection & Load Testing — Marietta, GA
A battery can test fine on a basic meter but still fail under load. Our professional battery load testing gives you a true picture of your battery's health before it leaves you stranded. We offer free battery inspections with every service visit.
We use professional battery load testers that simulate real-world starting conditions to accurately assess battery health. We also test the alternator's charging output and the starter's current draw to give you a complete picture of your vehicle's electrical health.
Why a Battery Test at the Parts Store Isn’t the Whole Story
The free battery test offered at any parts store measures one thing: the voltage and cranking capacity of the battery itself, usually at the moment you walk in with the car already started and the battery freshly charged from your commute. That test will tell you whether the battery is dead. It will not reliably tell you whether the battery is dying, whether the alternator is the real problem, or whether a parasitic draw is killing both. About half the batteries replaced after a "free test" verdict either fail again within months — because the underlying problem was never identified — or didn’t actually need replacing in the first place.
A complete battery inspection covers the whole electrical system. It includes a load test on the battery — pulling actual cranking-current load while monitoring voltage drop — which reveals weak cells that voltage-only tests miss. It includes alternator output testing at idle and under load with electrical accessories engaged, because a marginal alternator can charge a battery enough to pass a parts-store test but not enough to keep up with daily driving demand. It includes a parasitic draw test, performed with the vehicle fully asleep, which reveals aftermarket installations or failed modules pulling current overnight. And on 2014+ vehicles with battery management systems, it includes checking that the BMS is operating correctly — a faulty BMS will undercharge a healthy battery into failure within months.
At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, battery inspection means all of those tests, not just the first one. We tell you whether the battery itself is failing, whether the charging system is healthy, and whether anything else in the vehicle is contributing to early battery wear. If the answer is "your battery is fine and you have a parasitic draw from an aftermarket dash cam," that’s what we say — we don’t sell you a battery you don’t need. And if the answer is "your alternator is marginal and replacing only the battery will leave you stranded again in six months," that’s what we say too.
What a Complete Battery Inspection Actually Tests
- Load test on the battery, not just a voltage check. Voltage-only tests on a fully charged battery hide weak cells; a load test reveals them by pulling cranking-current demand while measuring voltage drop. A battery can pass a voltage test on Tuesday and fail to start the car on a cold Wednesday morning.
- Alternator output under load. A marginal alternator can charge well enough to pass a parts-store test but not well enough to keep up with daily driving demand. Output should hold at 13.8–14.4 volts at idle with electrical accessories on, and the test takes about two minutes.
- Parasitic draw measurement. With the vehicle fully asleep (typically 30 minutes after locking), the draw should be under 50mA. Aftermarket installs (dash cams in parking mode, audio amps, alarms) and failing modules can push that to several hundred mA, which drains the battery overnight and shortens its life dramatically.
- Battery management system check on 2014+ vehicles. A BMS that has lost its calibration or has a failed sensor will continue charging the new battery as if it were the old one, undercharging it and shortening its life. The check takes seconds with a proper scan tool — and quick-lube battery installations skip it.
If you’ve had a battery test from another shop and want a second opinion before authorizing a replacement, or if your vehicle has had unexplained battery issues despite a recent new battery, drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta. We’ll do the complete test, identify what is actually failing, and tell you honestly whether the battery is the problem or just the symptom. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.

How To Jumpstart Your Vehicle

How Car Batteries Work
A car battery is one of the most important parts of a car. It helps start the engine and powers all of the electrical components in the car. Most car batteries are lead-acid batteries. They have six cells that produce 2 volts each for a total of 12 volts.
