What a Real Multi-Point Inspection Looks Like (and Why Most Aren’t)
A "multi-point inspection" is one of the most-promised and least-delivered services in auto repair. Quick-lube chains offer it as a freebie with every oil change, dealership service writers reference it on every visit, and parts stores hand out checklists with their inspections. The problem is that "inspection" can mean almost anything — from a 90-second walk-around with a clipboard to a 30-minute methodical examination of dozens of wear items with actual measurements. The same words describe very different jobs, and the price of the inspection (which is often free) rarely tells you which one you’re actually getting.
A real multi-point inspection covers more than the obvious items. Tires get measured for tread depth on all four corners with a depth gauge — not eyeballed — and inspected for sidewall damage, uneven wear patterns, and proper inflation. Brake pads and rotors are measured with a micrometer where possible and compared to manufacturer minimum specs. Fluids are checked for level AND condition (color, contamination, smell on transmission fluid for instance). Belts, hoses, and cooling system components are inspected with the engine warm enough to reveal weeping seals. Battery and charging system are tested under load. Suspension components are checked for play. None of this is exotic, and none of it requires expensive equipment — but all of it takes time, and that time is what separates a real inspection from a checklist exercise.
At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, the multi-point inspection that comes with every oil change is the real version. We measure rather than estimate, document what we find, and give you the report with photos when something needs attention. We don’t flag items for the sake of generating estimates — if your brakes have 5mm of pad life left and your driving pattern is light, we’ll tell you that you have plenty of time before they need attention. The goal is information, not a sales pitch. After 20 years of doing this in Marietta, we know the difference between "needs attention now" and "monitor at next service," and we communicate that honestly.
What a Real Multi-Point Inspection Should Include
- Tread depth measurement with a gauge on all four tires — not just a glance. The legal minimum is 2/32"; the practical safe minimum in Georgia rain is 4/32". A real inspection tells you what you have, not just whether you’re "okay."
- Brake pad measurement against the manufacturer spec — usually 3-4mm minimum. The pad backing plate isn’t worn yet at that range, but the warning is on the timer. A shop that won’t give you the actual measurement is guessing.
- Fluid condition checks, not just level. Transmission fluid that has darkened from red to brown is past due regardless of mileage. Brake fluid that has absorbed moisture (the test takes seconds) has a lower boiling point than spec.
- Battery and charging system test under load. The battery test that the parts store does at full charge is not the same as the load test that reveals a battery dying under cranking demand. A real inspection includes the load test.
- Suspension component play check — sway bar end links, ball joints, tie rod ends. These are usually checked by hand with the vehicle on a lift, looking for movement that shouldn’t be there. Quick-lubes skip this.
If you’ve received a multi-point inspection report from another shop that you’re not sure how to interpret — or if you’d like the real version performed on your vehicle — drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta. We’ll do the actual examination, document what we find with photos, and tell you what needs attention now versus what can safely wait. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.
