Fluid flushes are one of the most variably appropriate services in auto repair — some are legitimate maintenance with a clear value proposition, others are upsells with marginal benefit, and a few are services that can damage the vehicle when performed on the wrong system. The shop that recommends every flush at every visit is selling, not servicing. The shop that never mentions any fluid service is missing legitimate maintenance. The shop you want falls between those extremes: recommends flushes when condition or interval warrants, declines when it doesn't, and explains the reasoning.

The legitimate flushes worth paying for include brake fluid (every 2-3 years regardless of mileage because the fluid absorbs moisture from the air — Georgia humidity accelerates this), power steering fluid on hydraulic systems (every 60,000-80,000 miles), and transmission fluid on conventional automatics when condition warrants. The questionable flushes include "engine flush" services that pour additive into the crankcase before an oil change (generally not recommended on modern engines) and aggressive cooling system flushes on neglected high-mileage vehicles (where dislodged debris can damage the heater core).
