How to Tell If Your Shop Knows Which Power Steering System You Have

Power steering used to be straightforward. From the 1970s through the early 2010s, vehicles ran hydraulic power steering — a belt-driven pump pushing fluid through a steering rack — and the failure modes were predictable: fluid leaks, pump bearings, rack seals. Diagnosis was straightforward and repair was bounded. Then the industry shifted, fast. Today there are three different power steering architectures in active production (hydraulic, electro-hydraulic, and pure electric — EPS), each with its own failure modes, diagnostic process, and repair options. A shop that approaches all three the same way will be wrong on at least two of them.

The most common mistake we see is shops treating an EPS failure as a hydraulic-system problem. Pure electric power steering has no fluid, no belt-driven pump, no hydraulic rack — so checking fluid level or recommending a "power steering flush" on an EPS vehicle isn’t just useless, it suggests the shop doesn’t know what system the vehicle has. The opposite mistake is also common: treating a hydraulic system as if it’s electronic, missing a simple leak that a 15-minute pressure test would have caught. Asking "what kind of power steering does my vehicle have?" before authorizing any work is a fair test of whether the shop is equipped to do the job.

At Advantage Auto Service in Marietta, power steering diagnosis starts with identifying the system. We scan for stored codes, test fluid level and condition on hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems, verify electrical output and steering torque sensor readings on EPS systems, and confirm the actual failure mode before quoting. Different systems get different processes — and we won’t pretend they’re interchangeable. We’ll also tell you honestly when a "power steering problem" is actually something else entirely (loose tie rods can mimic steering issues; a worn engine mount can change how steering feels under load).

Three Questions That Reveal Whether a Shop Knows Power Steering

  • Before quoting, can the shop tell you which power steering system your vehicle has? If they can’t answer that without looking it up, they’re not equipped to diagnose the failure. The system type changes everything about the right repair.
  • Are they suggesting a "power steering flush" on a vehicle with electric power steering? EPS has no fluid. A flush quote on an EPS vehicle is a sign the shop hasn’t identified the system — and that’s the most important diagnostic step.
  • On hydraulic systems, do they pressure-test for leaks before recommending pump replacement? Pumps get blamed for problems that are actually rack seals or pressure-hose leaks, both of which are cheaper repairs. A pressure test takes 15 minutes and tells the technician exactly where the leak is.

If your steering feels heavier than it used to, has developed a new noise, or has triggered a warning light, drop by Advantage Auto Service at 1775 Cobb Pkwy SE in Marietta. We’ll identify which power steering system your vehicle has, diagnose the actual failure, and quote the right repair — not the wrong one. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does power steering do?
Power steering uses hydraulic or electric pressure to make steering easier. Without it, steering would be very difficult.
What are signs of power steering problems?
Signs include hard steering, whining noise, or leaking fluid. Have your power steering system inspected if you notice these.
How much does power steering repair cost?
Power steering repairs range from $150-$600 for fluid flush or hose replacement. Pump replacement can cost $300-$800.
Can I drive without power steering?
You can drive briefly, but steering will be very difficult and tiring. Have your system repaired immediately.
Which power steering system does my vehicle have?
Modern vehicles use one of three architectures: hydraulic, electro-hydraulic, or pure electric (EPS). If a shop can’t tell you which system your vehicle has without looking it up, they’re not equipped to diagnose the failure. The system type changes everything about the right repair.
Can you flush an electric power steering system?
No. Electric power steering (EPS) has no fluid. A "power steering flush" quote on an EPS vehicle is a sign the shop hasn’t identified the system — and that’s the most important diagnostic step. EPS service is electrical and software-based, not fluid-based.
Should a shop pressure-test before quoting a power steering pump replacement?
Yes, on hydraulic systems. Pumps get blamed for problems that are actually rack seals or pressure-hose leaks, both of which are cheaper repairs. A pressure test takes 15 minutes and tells the technician exactly where the leak is.
