How to Tell If a Shop Knows How to Find a Coolant Leak

Coolant leaks come in two flavors that require completely different diagnostic approaches. External leaks β€” visible as drops or wet residue on the engine bay or driveway β€” usually trace to hoses, clamps, the water pump shaft seal, the radiator end caps, or (when it leaks into the cabin) the heater core. These are inspectable, identifiable, and quotable repairs. Internal leaks β€” where coolant disappears from the reservoir without any visible exterior wetness β€” are the dangerous kind: head gasket failures, cracked heads, cracked intake manifolds on V engines, or transmission cooler leaks inside the radiator. Internal leaks are also where the cost curve gets steep, fast.

A real coolant leak diagnosis starts with pressure testing β€” pressurizing the cooling system with the engine off so the leak becomes visible. If pressure holds, the leak is internal (the engine consumes the coolant during operation), which is itself diagnostic information. Pressure-test diagnosis takes 15-30 minutes. UV dye and electronic detection supplement when needed. A shop that quotes a coolant repair without pressure-testing first is guessing about which leak you have.

At Advantage Auto Service, coolant leak diagnosis follows a clear process: pressure test, identify external vs. internal, locate the source, and explain what we found before quoting. We've replaced enough head gaskets to know when "just a hose" is really the early warning of something bigger β€” and we'll tell you honestly when that's the case. We also know when a slow external leak can be addressed conservatively vs. when it indicates a more systemic cooling system issue.

Three Questions Every Coolant Leak Quote Should Answer

  • Did you pressure-test the cooling system? If not, the diagnosis is incomplete β€” you don't know whether the leak is external (component or hose) or internal (head gasket / cracked head).
  • Is the leak at a component (hose, clamp, water pump, radiator) or at a sealing surface (head gasket, intake manifold)? These have very different repair costs and the diagnosis should distinguish them clearly.
  • What's the recommended fix and the underlying cause? "Replace the hose" without explaining why the hose failed is incomplete. Heat-degraded hoses suggest the whole system is aging similarly; a single clamp failure suggests a one-off.

If you've been quoted a coolant repair by another shop and want a second opinion, or your coolant reservoir keeps needing top-offs without a visible explanation, drop by Advantage Auto Service. We'll pressure-test, identify the leak, and quote the right repair. Call (770) 951-8055 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes coolant leaks?
Coolant leaks result from worn hoses, damaged radiator, or failed water pump. We locate and repair the source.
How much does coolant leak repair cost?
Coolant leak repairs range from $100-$500 depending on the source and severity.
Is a coolant leak serious?
Yes, coolant leaks cause overheating and engine damage. Have leaks repaired immediately.
What should I do if my engine overheats?
Stop driving immediately and let the engine cool. Check coolant level and have the system inspected.
Did you pressure-test the cooling system to find the leak?
If a coolant leak quote doesn’t include a pressure test, the diagnosis is incomplete β€” you don’t know whether the leak is external (component or hose) or internal (head gasket or cracked head). Pressure testing is the first step in a real coolant leak diagnosis.
Is my coolant leak at a component or at a sealing surface?
These are very different repair categories. Component leaks (hose, clamp, water pump, radiator) and sealing-surface leaks (head gasket, intake manifold) have very different repair costs, and the diagnosis should distinguish them clearly before quoting any work.
What underlying cause should a coolant leak quote identify?
"Replace the hose" without explaining why the hose failed is incomplete. Heat-degraded hoses suggest the whole system is aging similarly; a single clamp failure suggests a one-off. The cause determines what else needs attention soon.
